It was a wonderful day to attend a HypnoBirthing birth.
Jocelyn and Miles had their baby girl Cadence this afternoon at 2:18 at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla weighing 6 lbs and 4 oz, 19 inches tall.
The day started with Jocelyn calling me at 5:45am while I was waking up with my 2 boys. I asked how far apart the surges were and it was 10 mins apart. She asked if she needed to call Miles who was in Las Vegas with a studio recording for his band, and I told her no need as she may be in her early stages of labor.
I went on my day volunteering for my oldest son's school as a room parent when I received my 2nd call of the day from Jocelyn at 10am. I asked her what she was sensing and what was happening. She had some bloody discharge and I told her to give me a half-hour to an hour to get to her so that I can make arrangements for my family and kids. I left my son's school and went on my way to see Jocelyn.
I got to their house in Point Loma and Grandma (Jocelyn's mom) opened the door for me and I saw Jocelyn relaxing, moving and sitting on the birthing ball doing her breathing and relaxation. Asked her a few more questions. By this time, I was assuming that she could be between 3 to 5 cm dilated. I got her luggage, birthing ball, and camera bag and put them in their SUV and we went on our way to the hospital. On the way to La Jolla, she called her OB/Gyn Dr. Gunnarson that she was in labor and the doctor requested for us to stop by the office so she can be checked there instead as her birth plan requests "to go home if less than 4 cms dilated." We went, Dr. Gunnarson checked her and to our amazement, Jocelyn was 100% effaced (thinning of cervix), baby was really low on the pelvis, and was 9 1/2 cms dilated.....WOW! and I thought she was only between 3 to 5. Dr. Gunnarson called over to L&D at Scripps LJ and instructed the nurses that Jocelyn is a HypnoBirthing mom so we got ourselves a couple of nurses that supports natural childbirth. She called her family to come for support as she is getting near in welcoming her baby girl and with no assurance that Miles would make it as his flight from Vegas does not arrive into San Diego until 1:50pm.
During labor, Jocelyn stayed focused and relaxed and the nurses were amazed on how well she was doing and coping with labor.....a typical relaxed birth. She felt the urge to push at around 1pm and Dr. Guru (on call for Dr. Gunnarson) followed the request of Jocelyn and started pushing at 1:10pm. Grandma and I were hoping that Miles would make it. Jocelyn kept on helping baby Cadence come out of the birth path using bearing down until she was crowning and by 2:15pm, Miles came through the door and all of us were cheering for joy. Jocelyn had found her second wind and birthed baby Cadence by 2:18pm....Miles' baby girl was just simply waiting for his daddy to help welcome her into this world.
I have told Jocelyn before I left them that she did a terrific and wonderful job! She had an easy birth...one of the 3 that I have attended previously of all 150 something I attended before.
Congratulations Miles and Jocelyn!
Welcome & Happy Birthday Cadence!
